Here it is! – ESL game

Flashcards to Teach Kids English

Target Vocabulary: Any vocabulary set.

Materials: Any flash cards set.

Game Play:

This is another memory game using flash cards, but only requires one of a kind. Place the flash cards face down on the floor or table. Call out one of the cards, eg. “Where is the apple?” The student to your left turns over one card and produces the target language, eg. It’s a banana.” If the card is incorrect, say “Sorry.” and turn the card over again. The teacher can ask the same question again, “Where is the apple?” When a student finds the correct card they say, “Here it is!”   Remember to really celebrate a correct answer It is not necessary to continue until all the cards have been found. The teacher can set a time limit and the student with the most cards at the end is the winner.

Note 1: Instead of playing as individuals, make teams where weaker students get partnered with stronger students.
Note 2: Not all games have to be competitive. Have the class work together to find all the cards.
Note 3: Let students take turns being the teacher and have them run the game when they get proficient.
