Fruit ESL Flash Cards Game Ideas and Tips

There are 17 flash cards in this set all in the plural from with the “s” in red to highlight the differences between singular and plural.

Just like the body flash cards, the plural ‘s’ is highlighted in red so that you can point out singular and plural to your students. I believe that this is an important distinction to make with students early on. Most textbooks have a chapter teaching singular and plural but I find it much more effective to constantly point out the ‘s’ and accentuate the pronunciation. Different languages have different ways of dealing with pluralization so this is likely a difficult subject for students to master. The more practice the better.

The Treasure Hunt game, Toy Car game and slap game are all good games for the Fruit cards. Another game you could try is The Guessing Game.

With this game, you or a student selects a card from the flash card set and other students have to guess what it is. You can give clues like “They are green.” “They are big.” “They are small.”

If children don’t know the adjectives you can make physical gestures with your hands to indicate meaning. If the children are lower level remember to keep the English simple.
You can have students answer with only the word, for example, “apples.” Or if they are a little higher level, have them answer in complete sentences, “They are apples.”
This can be a game if you divide the class into groups and they have to compete to get the most cards. Or you can play it non-competitively and the class as a whole has to guess all the cards.

TIP: Constant repetition with multiple targets each class will give your students the necessary review to internalize the English they learn. Keep in mind that students need 20 to 30 exposures to any given language target to really know and use the language. The more practice the better. Each activity only needs to be about 5 to 10 minutes long. Ten 5 minute activities spread out over many classes is much more effective than one 50 minute activity.
